National Science Day Rashtriya Vigyan Diwas is celebrated in India on February 28 each year to mark the discovery of the Raman effect by Indian physicist Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman on 28 February 1928. 

For his discovery, Raman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.


Raman Effect 

Raman effect or Raman scattering is popularly known as an inelastic scattering of a photon. When light is scattered from an atom or molecule, most photons are elastically scattered with almost the same energy (frequency) and wavelength as the incident photons. But a small fraction of the photons is scattered by excitation. The frequency of scattered photons is lower than the frequency of the incident photons.

Six foreign micro and mini spacecrafts as well as the Indo-French oceanographic study satellite, SARAL (Satellite for Argos-3 and Altika) were launched successfully by ISRO's PSLV-C20 rocket on 25 February 2013 from the spaceport at Sriharikota.

The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) of Indian Space Research Organization’s (ISRO) flew from first launch pad of Satish Dhawan Space Centre and was successfully put into the orbit. The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee witnessed this launch from mission control centre at Sriharikota.

'സില്‍വര്‍ ലൈനിങ്‌സ് പ്ലേബുക്ക്' എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിലെ പ്രകടനത്തിന് ജെന്നിഫര്‍ ലോറന്‍സ് മികച്ച നടിയായി തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടു.

World Cancer Day was founded by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration, written in 2008. 
The primary goal of the World Cancer Day is to significantly reduce death and illness caused by cancer by 2020

World Wetlands Day 

World Wetlands Day is celebrated internationally each year on 2 February. It marks the anniversary of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) in Ramsar, Iran, on 2 February 1971. 

The international theme for World Wetlands Day 2013 is Wetlands take care of water. Wetlands provide important hydrological functions such as groundwater recharge, water quality improvement and flood alleviation. The health of wetlands depends on the quality and quantity of water that reaches them. To secure their conservation and wise use it is essential that they are managed in the wider context of catchment-scale water resource management. 

2013 is the UN International Year for Water Cooperation and an ideal opportunity for Ramsar to look at the connection between water and wetlands.
