India's Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft has completed more than 9,000 orbits around the Moon

India's Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft has completed more than 9,000 orbits around the Moon, and imaging and scientific instruments on board have been providing excellent data, officials said on Monday.

Chandrayaan-2

Chandrayaan-2 mission is a highly complex mission, which represents a significant technological leap compared to the previous missions of ISRO, which brought together an Orbiter, Lander and Rover with the goal of exploring south pole of the Moon. This is a unique mission which aims at studying not just one area of the Moon but all the areas combining the exosphere, the surface as well as the sub-surface of the moon in a single mission.

Launcher

The GSLV Mk-III is India's most powerful launcher to date, and has been completely designed and fabricated from within the country.

Orbiter

The Orbiter will observe the lunar surface and relay communication between Earth and Chandrayaan 2's Lander — Vikram.

Vikram Lander

The lander was designed to execute India's first soft landing on the lunar surface.

Pragyan Rover

The rover was a 6-wheeled, AI-powered vehicle named Pragyan, which translates to 'wisdom' in Sanskrit.

History of Atom Bomb

Between 1919 and the early 1930s, scientists were piecing together the important parts of the atom's structure. In 1919 New Zealand physicist Ernest Rutherford discovered protons. In1932 James Chadwick discovered the neutron, neutrons share space with protons in the atom's nucleus.

Italian physicist Enrico Fermi thought to use neutrons for bombardment in 1934. Since neutrons have no charge, they can hit an atom's nucleus without being repelled. He successfully bombarded several elements and created new, radioactive ones in the process. What Fermi had done, without recognizing it, was discover the process of nuclear fission. Two German scientists, Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann, were the first to officially acknowledge this process in 1938 when they successfully split uranium atoms into two or more parts. Meitner interpreted these results as being nuclear fission and Hahn won the Nobel prize in physics for discovering fission in 1944.

Early in 1939, the world's scientific community discovered that German physicists had learned the secrets of splitting a uranium atom. Fears soon spread over the possibility of Nazi scientists utilizing that energy to produce a bomb capable of unspeakable destruction.

Scientists Albert Einstein, who fled Nazi persecution, and Enrico Fermi, who escaped Fascist Italy, were living in the United States. They agreed that the President must be informed of the dangers of atomic technology in the hands of the Axis powers.

Einstein penned a letter to President Roosevelt urging the development of an atomic research program later that year. Roosevelt saw neither the necessity nor the utility for such a project, but agreed to proceed slowly. In late 1941, the American effort to design and build an Atomic Bomb received its code name — the Manhattan Project. It was led by the United States with the support of the United Kingdom and Canada.

Scientists Who Invented the Atomic Bomb under the Manhattan Project: Robert Oppenheimer, David Bohm, Leo Szilard, Eugene Wigner, Otto Frisch, Rudolf Peierls, Felix Bloch, Niels Bohr, Emilio Segre, James Franck, Enrico Fermi, Klaus Fuchs and Edward Teller.

By the summer of 1945, Oppenheimer was ready to test the first bomb. On July 16, 1945, at 5:30 am at Trinity Site near Alamogordo, New Mexico, scientists of the Manhattan Project readied themselves to watch the detonation of the world's first atomic bomb.

On August 6, 1945 the American B-29 bomber known as the Enola Gay released the first atomic bomb to be used in warfare. The 9,000 pound bomb nicknamed "Little Boy(uranium-235)" detonated in Hiroshima, Japan. "Little Boy's" explosion was catastrophic and resulted in 66 thousand instantaneous deaths. Total vaporization from the blast measured one half a mile in diameter. Total destruction ranged one mile in diameter and serious blazes extended as far as three miles in diameter.

Three days after the release of "Little Boy" a second bomb named "Fat Man(plutonium)" was released on the town of Nagasaki. "Fat Man" weighed 10,000 pounds and annihilated nearly half of the city. In one split-second, the population of Nagasaki dropped from 422,000 to 383,000.

The 1752 Calendar Change

In accordance with a 1750 act of Parliament, England and its colonies changed calendars in 1752. By that time, the discrepancy between a solar year and the Julian Calendar had grown by an additional day, so that the calendar used in England and its colonies was 11 days out-of-sync with the Gregorian Calendar in use in most other parts of Europe.
England's calendar change included three major components. The Julian Calendar was replaced by the Gregorian Calendar, changing the formula for calculating leap years.  The beginning of the legal new year was moved from March 25 to January 1.  Finally, 11 days were dropped from the month of September 1752.
The changeover involved a series of steps:
  • December 31, 1750 was followed by January 1, 1750 (under the "Old Style" calendar, December was the 10th month and January the 11th)
  • March 24, 1750 was followed by March 25, 1751 (March 25 was the first day of the "Old Style" year)
  • December 31, 1751 was followed by January 1, 1752 (the switch from March 25 to January 1 as the first day of the year)
  • September 2, 1752 was followed by September 14, 1752 (drop of 11 days to conform to the Gregorian calendar)

Endocrine & Exocrine Glands

Gland is a cell or organ in man and other animals that synthesizes chemical substances and secretes them for the body to use or eliminate, either through a duct (exocrine gland) or directly into the bloodstream (endocrine gland)

Endocrine Glands secrete their products (hormones) directly into the bloodstream (ductless glands) or release hormones (paracrines) that affect only target cells nearby the release site.

1. Hypothalamus:

The hypothalamus is a small but important part of the brain. It plays an important role in the nervous system as well as in the endocrine system. Hormones produced by the hypothalamus are stored in the pituitary gland.

It is a neuroendocrine gland, synthesizes and secretes neuro hormones, control and regulate the secretion of pituitary hormones.

Functions:
  • controls the release of 8 major hormones by the pituitary gland
  • controls body temperature
  • control of food and water intake, hunger and thirst
  • control of sexual behavior and reproduction
  • control of daily cycles in physiological state and behaviour also known as circadian rhythm
  • mediation of emotional responses
Important Hormones:

Vasopressin (ADH, antidiuretic hormone):Vasopressin helps prevent the loss of water from the body by reducing urine output and helping the kidneys reabsorb water in the body. Vasopressin also raises blood pressure by constricting (narrowing) blood vessels.

Diabetes insipidus, which is caused by a lack of Vasopressin in the body.
Oxytocin: used clinically to stimulate contractions of the uterus during labour, to control bleeding following delivery, and to stimulate the secretion of breast milk (Milk injecting hormone).

2. Pituitary Gland:

The pituitary is a small, bean-shaped gland located below the brain in the skull. It is often called the "master gland" since it controls the secretion of hormones.

Important Hormones:

Growth hormone(Somatotrophin) which regulates growth, metabolism and body composition.

Prolactin stimulates milk production from the breasts after childbirth to enable nursing. It also affects sex hormone levels from ovaries in women and from testes in men.

Adrenocorticotropic hormone which stimulates the adrenal glands to secrete steroid hormones, principally cortisol

Luteinising hormone and follicle stimulating hormone, also known as gonadotrophins. They act on the ovaries or testes to stimulate sex hormone production and egg and sperm maturity.

Thyroid stimulating hormone(TSH) which stimulates the thyroid gland to secrete thyroid hormones.

Vasopressin & Oxytocin are produced by the hypothalamus and then stored in the posterior pituitary gland prior to being released into the bloodstream.

4. Pineal Gland:

The pineal gland is a pine cone shaped gland of the endocrine system. It produces the serotonin derivative Melatonin, a hormone that affects the modulation of wake/sleep patterns and seasonal functions. Pineal gland is also called Biological Clock.

4. Thyroid Gland:

The thyroid hormones, triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), are primarily responsible for regulation of metabolism. Iodine is necessary for the production of T3 and T4. A deficiency of iodine leads to decreased production of T3 and T4, enlarges the thyroid tissue and will cause the disease known as goitre.

The thyroid gland also produces calcitonin from cells called C-cells. Calcitonin is understood to play a role in regulating calcium levels in the body.

Abnormal increase in production of thyroid hormone is known as thyrotoxicosis or hyperthyroidism and reduced thyroid function is known as myxoedema or hypothyroidism.

Your doctor may order blood tests to determine levels of certain hormones, including:

  • Thyroid stimulating hormone (The release of thyroid hormones from the thyroid gland is controlled by TSH from the hypothalamus )
  • Triodothyronine (T3)
  • Thyroxine (T4)

4. Parathyroid Gland:

The sole purpose of the parathyroid glands is to control calcium within the blood.

The parathyroid gland secretes the hormone parathormone or parathyroid hormone (PTH).
The function of PTH is to increase the concentration of calcium in the blood, whereas calcitonin (a hormone produced by the parafollicular cells (C cells) of the thyroid gland) acts to decrease calcium concentration.
A parathyroid hormone (PTH) blood test  is used to help identify hyperparathyroidism or to find the cause of abnormal calcium levels. PTH controls calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood.

5. Thymus Gland:

The thymus is located in the upper part of the chest. The thymus is an important part of immune systems. It grows larger until puberty and then begins to shrink.

The gland produces thymosins, which are hormones that stimulate the development of antibodies.
The thymus also produces T-lymphocytes which are white blood cells that fight infections and destroy abnormal cells.

5. Adrenal Gland:

The adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys. The right adrenal gland is triangular shaped, while the left is semilunar shaped.
It has an inner medulla and outer cortex. The inner medulla produces epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine( while the outer cortex produces cortisol.

Medula: • Epinephrine has many functions in the body, regulating heart rate, blood vessel and air passage diameters, and metabolic shifts; epinephrine release is a crucial component of the fight-or-flight response of the sympathetic nervous system.

Epinephrine (adrenaline) is used to treat cardiac arrest and/or cardiac dysrhythmias.

              • Noradrenaline increasing blood pressure and heart rate, and by the endings of sympathetic nerves, when it acts as a neurotransmitter both centrally and peripherally. This enables the body to perform well in stressful situations.

Cortex:   • Cortisol. The adrenal glands increase their production of cortisol in response to stress. Cortisol raises blood sugar and blood pressure levels and moderates immune function

               • Aldosterone This hormone helps to keep salt and water balanced in the body.

Estrogen and testosterone are produced in small but significant amounts by the adrenals as well as by the ovaries and testicles.

Exocrine Glands are glands that secrete their products (excluding hormones and other chemical messengers) into ducts (duct glands) which lead directly into the external environment.

Celebrating 100 Years of Indian Cinema

Dadasaheb Phalke, the father of Indian Cinema, released his epochal feature film Raja Harishchandra on 3rd May 1913, it is unlikely that either the exhibitors or the pioneer film maker realized they were unleashing a mass entertainment medium that would hold millions in sway for the next hundred years. The French might have introduced the concept of moving images, but little did anyone know that India would one day become the largest film industry in the world. It's a miracle that Indian cinema has withstood the test of time despite the vast cultural differences in the past 100 years.

Human Rights Day, 10 December

Human Rights Day presents an opportunity, every year, to celebrate human rights, highlight a specific issue, and advocate for the full enjoyment of all human rights by everyone everywhere.
This year, the spotlight is on the rights of all people — women, youth, minorities, persons with disabilities, indigenous people, the poor and marginalized — to make their voices heard in public life and be included in political decision-making.
These human rights — the rights to freedom of opinion and expression, to peaceful assembly and association, and to take part in government (articles 19, 20 and 21 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights) have been at the centre of the historic changes in the Arab world over the past two years, in which millions have taken to the streets to demand change. In other parts of the world, the “99%” made their voices heard through the global Occupy movement protesting economic, political and social inequality.

Organ transplant pioneer Joseph Murray dies at 93

Dr. Joseph E. Murray, the Nobel laureate who conducted the world's first successful organ transplant, died Monday at the Boston hospital where the pioneering surgery was performed. He was 93. On Dec. 23, 1954, in Operating Room 2 of the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, Dr. Murray took the healthy kidney of Ronald Herrick and sutured it into the donor's dying identical twin, Richard. With that 5½-hour operation, Dr. Murray and his team saved a life, sparked an ethical debate that still echoes today, and opened medicine to a new frontier. Murray, who focused on plastic and reconstructive surgery for most of his career, was recognized with the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1990.
